Arts and Culture to inaugurate the Legal Deposit Committee

The Acting Director General for the Department of Arts and Culture, Mr Vusi Ndima, will on Thursday, 22 September 2016 meet with Legal Deposit Committee for its first inaugural meeting at National Library of South Africa in Pretoria, Gauteng.  The Minister of Arts and Culture appointed Legal Deposit Committee with effect from 01 July 2016 – 30 June 2019.

The role of the Committee is to make sure that all the documents are preserved and made accessible to the citizens and our future generations. Legal deposit is an internationally recognised practice within the global library community, it is a statutory requirement that any organisation, commercial or public and any individual, producing any type of documentation in multiple copies, deposits one or more copies to the designated Legal Deposit institution.

The Committee will also provide among others, legal advice to the Ministry of Arts and Culture on matters relating to the collection, preservation and advancement of the Legal Deposit Act. It is important that citizens have access to government information, through their experience and expertise, the Legal Deposit Committee will provide the department with guidance on how best to serve South African communities.
