The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Makhotso Maggie Sotyu, will lead the unveiling of Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma’s grave, in partnership with the MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, South African Heritage Resources Agency, National Heritage Council and Maqoma Legacy Group.
The Deputy Minister will also express the intention to declare the whole precinct of Ntaba-Ka-Ndoda, as a National Heritage Site, with the intent to make the site an economic and tourism hub of heritage, culture and arts for South Africa and the world.
The unveiling ceremony is a culmination of a visit by the Deputy Minister in 2018 responding to the Maqoma Legacy Trust, who have requested the Department of Arts and Culture to assist with the revival and restoration of the late Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma’s legacy. The late Chief Maqoma was the first Black African to be incarcerated at Robben Island as a leader who fought fiercely against the Colonial rulers to reclaim the natives’ captured and stolen land in the Eastern Cape.
